STUDENTS’ PSYCHOLOGICAL WELL-BEING IN LEARNING AND SPEAKING ENGLISH: A CASE STUDY OF INDONESIAN AND PHILIPPINES HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

Erpapalemlah, Panisyah Nasyro Janna - Personal Name;

The objective of this research was to explore how students' psychological well-being influences their learning and speaking abilities in English and how they overcome negative psychological well-being that affects them academically. This study used qualitative research techniques with a case study approach to enable the writer to collect extensive and detailed data from a small group of participants and analyse them in depth. The participants for this study comprise Grade 10 high school students from Indonesia and the Philippines. Convenience sampling was used, with participants chosen based on the writer's availability and accessibility. The sample includes a Grade 10 Filipino Science, Technology and Engineering (STE) Program class consisting of 38 students and a Grade 10 Indonesian Cambridge Curriculum class with 30 students. This study's data collection method involved a 20-item questionnaire and interview. The results of the study revealed a correlation between mental well-being, language learning, and academic performance. Many Indonesian and Filipino students suffer from communication challenges due to insufficient practice, fear, and difficulties expressing themselves verbally in English due to limited vocabulary knowledge.
