The Realtionship between Maternal Behavior and the Incidence of Acute Respiratory Tract Invection (ARI) in Toddlers at Bayung Lencir Health Center Work Area XIV + 87 pages, 43 tables, 3 pictures, 2 attachments ABSTRACT Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI) is one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality in toddlers, especially in developing countries. One important strategy in preventing ARI is the active involvement of family members in early efforts specifically for ARI in toddlers such as intrinsic and extrinsic factors. This study aims to determine the relationship between maternal behavior (knowledge, attitude, and action) with the incidence of ARI in toddlers in the Bayung Lencir Health Center work area. This study used an analytical observational design with a case-control approach. The case sample was toddlers who experienced ARI, while the control sample was toddlers who did not experience ARI. The total sample was 104 respondents (52 cases and 52 controls), using a simple random sampling technique. Data analysis was carried out using the chi-square test, odds ratio (OR) calculation, and logistic regression. The results showed a significant relationship between the variables of maternal knowledge (p = 0.000), maternal attitude, (p = 0.030) and the presence of active smokers at home (p = 0.000) with the incidence of ARI in toddlers. The results of the multivariate analysis showed that the presence of active smokers was the most dominant variable with an OR value of 34,091 (95% = 7,481-155,350). The conclusion of this study is that maternal knowledge and the presence of active smokers at home are dominant factors in the incidence of ARI in toddlers, so it is recommended that health centers improve education for mothers of toddlers regarding the dangers of cigarette smoke exposure and the importance of increasing knowledge in preventing ARI.
