UJI KARAKTERISTIK DAN AKTIVITAS ANTIBAKTERI CANGKANG TELUR BEBEK (Anas platyrhynchos domesticus) TERHADAP Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Background: Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a Gram-negative bacterium that is opportunistic and can be one of the causes of nosocomial infections as well as disorders in the oral cavity. One potential source of alternative antibiotics is duck eggshell waste (Anas platyrhynchos domesticus), which contains calcium carbonate that has antimicrobial activity. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the characteristics of duck eggshell calcined CaO and test its antibacterial effectiveness against P. aeruginosa. Methods: Eggshells were heated through calcination process at three temperature levels: 600°C, 800°C, and 1000°C. Compound characterization was carried out using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), while the antibacterial activity test was carried out in vitro by disc diffusion method to measure the growth inhibition zone of P. aeruginosa ATCC 9027. Results: The sample with calcination treatment at 1000°C showed the largest inhibition zone diameter, indicating the highest antibacterial power. XRD tests confirmed that increasing the calcination temperature was directly proportional of the resulting calcium oxide (CaO). Conclusion: Duck eggshell calcined at high temperature has potential as a natural antibacterial material that is effective against P. aeruginosa, and has the opportunity to be applied in the health field, especially dentistry.
