EFEKTIVITAS EKSTRAK UBI JALAR UNGU (Ipomoea batatas L.) TERHADAP ZONA HAMBAT BAKTERI Staphylococcus aureus

Purple sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) is a major food crop throughout the world and is widely recognized in Indonesia. Purple sweet potato has the potential to be used as an antibacterial agent to overcome infections caused by Staphyloccus aureus (S. aureus). Therefore, a study was performed with the aim of determining the effectiveness of purple sweet potato extract (Ipomoea batatas L.) against the inhibition zone of S. aureus bacteria. In vitro laboratory experimental research was conducted on samples of S. aureus ATCC 29213 bacteria and held at the Biochemistry Laboratory, Microbiology Laboratory, Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University, and Health Laboratory Center of Palembang. This study used Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion test. The study used the Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion test. Purple sweet potato extract was obtained from the extraction process and then prepared into three concentration variations, which are 25%, 50%, and 75%. The positive control used a cefotaxime and the negative control used a blank disc. The parameter measured for the disc diffusion test is the diameter of the inhibition zone (mm), each group consists of five repetitions. The results showed that there was no zone of inhibition of S. aureus bacteria after being given purple sweet potato extract with concentrations of 25%, 50%, 75%. Inhibition zone was only found on the disc with cefotaxime antibiotic as a positive control. Purple sweet potato extract has no antibacterial activity against S. aureus bacteria. No inhibition zone was formed by extract of purple sweet potato of 25%, 50%, and 75% against S. aureus bacteria. There is a difference in effectiveness between purple sweet potato extract and cefotaxime antibiotic against the inhibition zone of S. aureus bacteria.
