PATRON-KLIEN ANTARA PETANI KOPI DAN TENGKULAK DI DESA BINTUHAN KABUPATEN LAHAT
This study examines the patron-client relationship between coffee farmers and middlemen (tengkulak)in the marketing of coffee harvests in Bintuhan Village, Lahat Regency. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method with a phenomenological strategy. Data were collected through interviews, observation, and documentation involving five farmers and three middlemen. James C. Scott’s theory of patron-client relations is used to analyze the unequal relationship between the two parties, which take place within a framework of reciprocity and social attachment. The findings indicate that this relationship is shaped not only by economic need a such as limited capital and restricted market access, but also reinforced by symbolic and inherited social mechanisms. The patron-client ties are built upon five main elements: ease of market access, assistance with capital or pre-harvest needs, intergeneration social ties, reciprocal benefits, and emotional harvest needs, intergenerational social ties, reciprocal benefits, and emotional loyalty. Middlemen hold dominant control over pricing and distribution, while farmers remain dependent due to the absence of alternative distribution, while farmers remain dependent due to the absence of alternative distribution channels and social pressures that limit their options. Although there is no explicit coercion, the relationship persists through repetitive social patterns, producing a normalized yet concealed structure of dependency. The absence of the state in regulating agricultural distribution further strengthens the position of middlemen as dominant actors in the local market. These findings assert that the patron-client relationship is not solely driven by economic factors, but also sustained by social constructions that reproduce dominant in a continuous and systemic manner.
