PILIHAN RASIONAL ARAB SAUDI DALAM MENGAKUISISI NEWCASTLE UNITED

Muharram, Ahmad Fatih - Personal Name;

Saudi Arabia is trying to get rid of its dependence on state income derived from mining products, especially oil. In its efforts, Saudi Arabia formulated the Saudi Vision 2030 framework to diversify its country's income sources. Several sectors, such as tourism and entertainment, are encouraged to become sources of state income. One of Saudi Arabia's efforts to realize Saudi Vision 2030 is to acquire the English football club Newcastle United in 2021. This research seeks to find out the reasons why Saudi Arabia chose Newcastle United as the first club to be acquired considering that Newcastle United is not a club with great achievements like Paris Saint-Germain which is owned by Qatar, or Manchester City which is owned by the United Arab Emirates. This research has a qualitative descriptive design and uses rational choice theory to dissect the research problem. This research uses qualitative data originating from secondary sources. The research results found that Saudi Arabia still depends on oil as the country's main income and is trying to get rid of dependence by preparing the Saudi Vision 2030 framework. Saudi Arabia is trying to maintain economic prosperity and stability of state income through Saudi Vision 2030. Newcastle United was chosen by Saudi Arabia as an investment firstly in the sphere of football because it can help Saudi Arabia show its existence in the international world in order to compete with other countries, especially in the Middle East. Newcastle United was chosen because Newcastle United's performance was the second best of all the available options, Newcastle United's stadium occupancy rate was the highest, the price to acquire Newcastle United was not too high, and the fan group's disappointment with the leadership of the previous owner meant there was no resistance to the acquisition Newcastle United.
