Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease of the joints characterized by cartilage destruction and thickening of the subchondral bone. Joint degeneration in osteoarthritis causes pain and stiffness, which limits joint movement. In Indonesia, the prevalence of osteoarthritis reaches 5% at age 61 years. Body mass index and physical activity are factors that can affect the severity of genu osteoarthritis. This study aims to determine the relationship between body mass index and physical activity on the severity of knee osteoarthritis in patients at the Medical Rehabilitation Installation of RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang in 2024. This study was an observational analytic study with a cross-sectional design using primary data. The study sample amounted to 70 patients with knee osteoarthritis at the Medical Rehabilitation Installation of RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang in 2024. Data analysis using the chi-square test. The results showed that most patients had moderate knee osteoarthritis (41.4%), followed by severe (31.4%), and mild (27.1%) categories. The majority of patients had BMI in the obese category (51.4%) and moderate physical activity (41.4%). There is a significant relationship between BMI (p = 0.002) and physical activity (p = 0.013) with the severity of knee osteoarthritis. There is a significant relationship between BMI and physical activity with the severity of knee osteoarthritis in patients at the Medical Rehabilitation Installation of RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. Higher BMI and inappropriate physical activity (too light or too heavy) tend to be associated with higher severity of knee osteoarthritis.
