HUBUNGAN USIA DAN STATUS GIZI IBU MENYUSUI DENGAN KADAR PROTEIN PADA ASI
Background: Breast Milk is an essential source of nutrition for infants, containing micronutrients, macronutrients, and bioactive components that support their health and development. Breast milk consists of 87%-88% water, 7% lactose, 1% protein, and 3.8% fat, as well as various vitamins and antibodies that play a role in protecting infants from diseases. The composition of breast milk is influenced by factors such as the maternal age, nutritional status, and breastfeeding frequency. Breast milk is important for the infants’ health. Furthermore, further study is needed to know the relationship between maternal age and nutritional status with protein levels in breast milk. Methods: This study is an observational analytical study with a cross-sectional approach conducted at the Basic Medical Chemistry Laboratory of the Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University from July to November 2024. A total of 52 samples of breast milk were collected from breastfeeding mothers in Palembang aged 17 to 39 years with the BMI ranging from 16.65 to 36.85. Based on age, the samples were divided into three categories: 35 years. Based on BMI, the samples were categorized into three groups: underweight (18.4), normal (18.5 to 25) and overweight (25.1). Protein levels in breast milk were measured using the Lowry method, and data were analyzed using chi-square tests. Results: The average protein level in breast milk was found 15.462±2.102 mg/mL. The fisher’s extract test results showed that there was no significant relationship between maternal age and protein levels in breast milk with a p-value of 0.410 (p > 0.05). Similarly, fisher’s exact test shows there was no significant relationship between maternal nutritional status and protein levels in breast milk with a p-value of 0.183 (p > 0.05). Conclusion: On this study, the maternal age and nutritional status did not influence protein levels in breast milk.
