Asmarani, Azizah Qayla - Personal Name;

Background: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a common complication among patients with diabetes mellitus (DM), particularly those with type 2 DM, with a prevalence of up to 25.1%. This complication is one of the leading causes of vision loss in elderly diabetic patients, primarily due to hyperglycemia and alterations in metabolic pathways. This study aims to evaluate the prevalence and characteristics of DR among patients with type 2 DM at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital, Palembang. Methods: This was a descriptive, observational study using secondary data obtained from the medical records of patients with type 2 DM treated at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital, Palembang, from July 2021 to July 2025 who met the inclusion criteria. A total of 110 patients were included using a total sampling technique. Results: The results showed that the prevalence of DR among patients with type 2 DM at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital, Palembang, increased from 3.7% to 13.1% compared to the initial year of observation. Among the 110 patients, the majority were aged 45–65 years (72.7%), female (61.8%), had a family history of diabetes (73.6%), had a high school education (53.6%), had advanced or proliferative DR (43.6%), had elevated HbA1c levels (>9%) (37.3%), had a high BMI (69.1%), had a duration of diabetes of 5–10 years (48.2%), and were using oral antidiabetic medication (31.8%). Conclusion: The prevalence of DR among patients with type 2 DM has shown an increasing trend. Most patients were aged 45–65 years, female, had a family history of diabetes, had a high school education, presented with proliferative DR, had elevated HbA1c levels and BMI, had a diabetes duration of 5–10 years, and were on oral antidiabetic therapy.
