PREVALENSI KOINFEKSI HEPATITIS C PADA ODHIV DI RSUP DR. MOHAMMAD HOESIN PALEMBANG PERIODE 2023 - 2024
Background. Human Immunodefeciency Virus (HIV) is an RNA virus that targets the immune system, particularly CD4+ cells, rendering individuals more susceptible to opportunistic infections, including Hepatitis C Virus (HCV). HCV/HIV coinfection has become an increasingly complex public health issue, as both viruses share similar transmission routes, especially through the sharing or needles and high risk sexual behaviors. This coinfection accelerates liver disease progression, significantly increasing the risk of fibrosis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma, while also worsening prognosis and mortality rates. Methods. This study is a descriptive observational research with a retrospective design. Secondary data were obtained from the medical records of HIV-infected patients treated at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital Palembang from January 2023 to December 2025. The analyzed data included coinfection status, age, sex, occupational history, educational background, risk factors, and degree of liver damage. Results. Out of a total of 639 HIV patients studied, 34 patients (5.3%) were found to have Hepatitis C coinfection. Based on demographic analysis, the largest age group among the coinfected patients was between 41 and 50 years old (61.8%), with a majority being male (85.3%). Most of the coinfected patients worked as self- employed or entrepreneurs (38.2%). Nearly half of them had completed the mandatory 12 years of education or its equivalent at the high school level (44.1%). The primary risk factor identified was sexual transmission (58.8%). Furthermore, assessment of the severity of liver damage revealed that stage F3 (29.4%) was the most frequently observed stage. Conclusion. The prevalence of Hepatitis C coinfection among people living with HIV (PLHIV) at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital Palembang is 5.3%, with the highest degree of liver damage observed in stage F4 (8.8%) and the most common stage being F3 (29.4%).
