PUBLIC HEALTH STUDY PROGRAM FACULTY OF PUBLIC HEALTH SRIWIJAYA UNIVERSITY Thesis, 30 Augus 2025 Selly Anggraeni, supervised by Laura Dwi Pratiwi, S.KM., M.KM The Relationship Between Community Hygiene and Sanitation in Riverside Areas and the Incidence of Diarrhea Among Toddlers in the Working Area of Kertapati Public Health Center xvii + 77 pages, 27 tables, 4 figures, 12 appendices ABSTRACT Diarrhea remains a serious public health problem, particularly among children under five years of age, especially in areas with poor hygiene and sanitation conditions. The number of diarrhea cases among toddlers in Kertapati District ranks the highest in Palembang City, with a total of 2,315 cases. This study aimed to determine the relationship between community hygiene and sanitation in riverside areas and the incidence of diarrhea among toddlers in the working area of Kertapati Public Health Center. This research employed a cross-sectional design with a total of 93 respondents. Data were collected through questionnaires and field observations. Data analysis consisted of univariate, bivariate using the Chi-square test, and multivariate using multiple logistic regression with a predictive model. The results showed that out of 93 toddlers, 50 (53.8%) did not experience diarrhea, while 43 (46.2%) did. There was a significant relationship between handwashing with soap (CTPS) (p-value=0.000), household wastewater disposal (SPAL) (p-value=0.004), and rotavirus immunization (p-value=0.001) with the incidence of diarrhea in toddlers. Meanwhile, nail-cutting habits (p-value=0.372), quality of clean water (p-value=0.587), and toilet conditions (p-value=0.376) were not significantly associated. The most dominant factor influencing diarrhea was handwashing with soap (CTPS) with PR=0.163 (95% CI: 0.053–0.495). It is recommended that the community improve clean and healthy living behaviors by maintaining personal and environmental hygiene, properly managing household waste, and actively participating in keeping the riverside environment clean to reduce the risk of diarrhea among toddlers.
