PENGARUH RAGI TEMPE (RHIZOPUS OLIGOSPORUS) PADA PEMBUATAN MATERIAL BIOFOAM DARI PATI JAGUNG DAN KULIT KACANG

Guzali, Adji - Personal Name;

Biodegradable packaging such as bioplastics and biofoam is becoming an interesting subject and continues to be deepened due to the environmental impact resulting from the abundant use of environmentally unfriendly packaging such as plastic and styrofoam. Biofoam or Biodegradable foam is a packaging that is able to decompose naturally due to the activity of microorganisms, because the main ingredients come from nature, such as starch and fiber. This study aims to evaluate of variations in the ratio of tempe yeast and the length of fermentation in the manufacture of biofoam made from a mixture of corn starch, peanut skin and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) on the value of biodegradability, water absorption, density and surface morphology. Preparation of biofoam through stages such as making peanut skin fiber and molding biofoam with baking process method. Biofoam made consists of 6 sample formulations with variations in the ratio of tempe yeast (0.03%; 0.045% and 0.06%) with a comparison of fermentation time (24 hours and 48 hours). Sample R3 (0.045% yeast, 24 hours fermentation) had the fastest biodegradability results of 100% for 21 days and the best water absorption of 3.57% (1 minutes) and 20,17% (15 minutes). Then the highest density value was found in sample R4 (0.045% yeast, 48 hours fermentation) of 1.03 gr/cm3. The results of the surface morphology of the samples using a scanning electron microscope found that the surface looks rough, there are small feature areas that show cracks, starch granules, and pores caused by the addition of tempe yeast.
