STUDI EKSPERIMENTAL PEMBUATAN MATERIAL BIOFOAM BERBAHAN DASAR PATI SINGKONG DAN AMPAS TEBU
Environmental pollution caused by styrofoam has prompted researchers to develop environmentally friendly packaging. Biofoam, which is made from starch and natural fibers, is an option because it is easily decomposed, safe for health, and made from natural ingredients. This study aims to analyze the effect of varying concentrations of glycerol and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) on the manufacture of biofoam with cassava starch and sugarcane bagasse on the value of density, water absorption, biodegradation, and surface morphology. The manufacture of biofoam begins with preparing sugarcane bagasse fiber which is mashed with a size of 60 mesh. Furthermore, all materials are mixed and processed using the baking process method. This process is carried out in a furnace at 180°C for 2 hours. The manufacture of this biofoam consists of 6 sample formulas with varying concentrations of glycerol (0%, 3%, 5%) and PVA (30%, 40%). Sample A6 (5% glycerol and 40% PVA) showed the highest density value of 1.149 g/cm^3, Sample A2 (0% glycerol and 40% PVA) showed the best water absorption value of 21.66%, Sample A5 (5% glycerol and 30% PVA) showed the fastest biodegradation value of 92% within 21 days, SEM testing showed inhomogeneous surface morphology of biofoam. In this study, it was found that the addition of glycerol concentration increased the value of density, water absorption, and biodegradation, while the addition of 40% PVA increased the value of density, and decreased the value of water absorption and biodegradation.
