HUBUNGAN KONSUMSI KAFEIN DENGAN KEJADIAN REFLUKS LARINGOFARING (LPR) PADA MAHASISWA FAKULTAS KEDOKTERAN UNIVERSITAS SRIWIJAYA ANGKATAN 2022

Nabilah, Hania - Personal Name;

Background. Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) is a pathological condition caused by the backflow of stomach contents into the larynx and pharynx, causing symptoms in the upper respiratory tract. One of the suspected risk factors is caffeine consumption, as it can decrease lower esophageal sphincter pressure and increase gastric acid secretion. Medical students tend to consume caffeinated beverages to support their academic activities, thereby potentially increasing their risk of LPR. Methods. This study used an observational analytical design with a cross-sectional approach. The study population consisted of 2022 students from the Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University. Total sampling technique was used, with a final sample size of 116 respondents who met the inclusion criteria. Caffeine consumption data were collected using the Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ), while LPR incidence was measured using the Reflux Symptom Index (RSI). Analysis was performed univariately and bivariately using the Chi-Square test, with a p-value < 0.05 considered significant. Results. The prevalence of caffeine consumption among students was 48.5% (116 out of 239 students). The prevalence of LPR based on an RSI score ≥13 was 20.7% (24 out of 116 respondents). Bivariate analysis showed a significant relationship between caffeine consumption levels and the incidence of LPR (p = 0.014). Students with high caffeine consumption had a 3.8 times greater risk of experiencing LPR compared to students with low-moderate caffeine consumption. Conclusion. There is a significant association between caffeine consumption and the occurrence of LPR in medical students. High caffeine consumption has been shown to increase the risk of LPR.
