EFEKTIVITAS EKSTRAK BONGGOL NANAS (Ananas comosus L.Merr) TERHADAP ZONA HAMBAT BAKTERI Staphylococcus aureus PADA PASIEN IMPETIGO DI RSMH PALEMBANG
Background: Impetigo is a superficial skin infection in children mainly caused by Staphylococcus aureus. Although mupirocin is effective, long-term use may cause side effects and resistance. The pineapple core (Ananas comosus L. Merr.) contains bioactive compounds with potential antibacterial effects against S. aureus. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of pineapple core extract on the inhibition zone of S. aureus compared to mupirocin in impetigo patients. Methods: An in vitro study with a post-test only control group design was conducted at Balai Besar Laboratorium Kesehatan Masyarakat Palembang using 30 S. aureus isolates. The disk diffusion method on Mueller-Hinton agar was applied with a negative control (placebo), a positive control (mupirocin), and pineapple core extract concentrations of 50%, 75%, and 100%. Results: All extract concentrations produced inhibition zones against S. aureus, with diameters increasing at higher concentrations. Statistical analysis showed significant differences among treatment groups (p < 0.05). The 100% concentration demonstrated the highest antibacterial efficacy, though still lower than mupirocin. Discussion: The antibacterial effect of pineapple core extract likely results from synergistic active compounds that damage bacterial cell walls and inhibit growth, with higher concentrations showing stronger effects. Conclusion: Pineapple core extract shows antibacterial efficacy against Staphylococcus aureus, increasing with concentration. The 100% extract is the most effective, though less active than mupirocin.
