EFEKTIVITAS EKSTRAK BONGGOL NANAS (ANANAS COMOSUS L. MERR) TERHADAP ZONA HAMBAT BAKTERI STREPTOCOCCUS PYOGENES

Revanza, M. Daffa - Personal Name;

Backgrounds: Impetigo is a common superficial skin infection often caused by Streptococcus pyogenes. Mupirocin is a first-line treatment, but rising antibiotic resistance encourages the search for alternative therapies, including pineapple core (Ananas comosus L. Merr) extract, which contains active compounds such as bromelain with potential antibacterial effects. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of pineapple core extract in producing inhibition zones against S. pyogenes compared to mupirocin. Methods: This was an in vitro experimental study with a post-test only control group design. Susceptibility testing was performed using the disk diffusion method on blood agar against S. pyogenes isolates from impetigo patients. Treatment groups included pineapple core extract at concentrations of 50%, 75%, and 100%, while mupirocin served as a positive control. Data were analyzed using univariate, bivariate, multivariate, and post-hoc tests. Results: The results showed that pineapple core extract produced inhibition zones at all concentrations, with mean diameters of 8.57 ± 0.34 mm, 9.59 ± 0.53 mm, and 10.68 ± 0.54 mm, respectively. Multivariate analysis revealed significant differences among all groups, including comparisons with the positive control (p < 0.05). Post-hoc testing confirmed that all extract concentrations differed significantly from mupirocin (p = 0.000; p < 0.050). Conclusion: The 100% pineapple core extract demonstrated the strongest antibacterial activity among the tested concentrations. However, its inhibitory effect against S. pyogenes remained inferior to mupirocin. Keywords: pineapple core extract, Streptococcus pyogenes, inhibition zone.
