UJI AKTIVITAS EKSTRAK DAUN KARAMUNTING (Rhodomyrtus tomentosa (Aiton) Hassk.) TERHADAP BAKTERI Stenotrophomonas maltophilia

Humaira, Nabila Tsabitah - Personal Name;

Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is a Gram-negative bacterium that acts as an opportunistic pathogen and is frequently associated with pneumonia and bacteremia. One of the bio-pharmaceutical plants with potential activity against Stenotrophomonas maltophilia infection is karamunting (Rhodomyrtus tomentosa (Aiton) Hassk.), which is widely found in Southeast Asia. The use of karamunting leaf extract as an antimicrobial agent has been reported to exhibit antibacterial activity. This study was a descriptive laboratory experimental research. The study was conducted using six treatment groups consisting of concentrations of 125 µg/mL, 250 µg/mL, 500 µg/mL, 1000 µg/mL, and 2000 µg/mL, as well as a control group. Additional extended concentrations of 4000 µg/mL, 6000 µg/mL, 8000 µg/mL, and 10,000 µg/mL were also included. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was assessed using the disc diffusion method, and the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) was evaluated using the dilution method. The study was carried out with four replications based on Federer’s formula. Based on the results of the study, the MIC was found at a concentration of 10000 µg/mL with an average inhibition zone of 10 mm. However, the MBC value was not obtained. Phytochemical analysis showed that karamunting leaf extract contains alkaloids, flavonoids, triterpenoids, saponins, tannins, and phenols. Karamunting leaf extract contains several secondary metabolites that are capable of inhibiting bacterial growth but are not sufficiently effective in killing the Gram-negative bacterium Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. Keywords: Karamunting leaf extract, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, antibacterial
