HUBUNGAN BAYI BERAT LAHIR RENDAH DENGAN KEJADIAN ANEMIA PADA NEONATAL YANG DIRAWAT DI PERINATALOGI RS DR. MOHAMMAD HOESIN
Background. Low Birth Weight (LBW) remains a significant neonatal health problem, particularly in developing countries. Infants born with a birth weight of less than 2,500 grams have a higher risk of developing various complications, including neonatal anemia. Anemia in LBW infants may result from limited iron stores, prematurity, bone marrow immaturity, increased erythrocyte destruction, and maternal anemia that impairs transplacental iron transfer. This condition may increase neonatal morbidity, mortality, and the risk of impaired growth and development. Limited local data in South Sumatera highlight the need for this study to evaluate the relationship between LBW and the incidence of neonatal anemia. Method. This study was an analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design. Data were obtained from medical records of all neonates admitted to the NICU and perinatology unit of Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang during January–December 2024 using a total sampling technique. Study variables included birth weight, anemia status, clinical characteristics, and hematological laboratory parameters. Result. Most neonates were in stable clinical condition, with a relatively balanced proportion of LBW and non-LBW infants and a predominance of non-anemic cases. The majority of infants were born preterm, delivered by cesarean section, and did not experience sepsis or bleeding. Hematological laboratory parameters, including hemoglobin, hematocrit, erythrocyte count, erythrocyte indices, leukocyte count, and platelet count, were predominantly within normal ranges. Chi-square analysis demonstrated a statistically significant association between low birth weight and the incidence of neonatal anemia. Conclusion. Low birth weight infants have a higher risk of developing anemia compared to those with normal birth weight, indicating the need for close monitoring and early intervention to prevent neonatal anemia-related complications.
