IDENTIFIKASI TELUR SOIL TRANSMITTED HELMINTHS (STH) PADA TUBUH LALAT DI PASAR TRADISIONAL PALEMBANG
Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections in Indonesia remain highly prevalent (2.5–62%), particularly among populations with poor sanitation. Flies can act as mechanical vectors through food contamination, and warm, humid environments rich in organic waste support fly breeding. This study aimed to assess the presence of STH egg contamination on the bodies of flies captured at the Padang Selasa Traditional Market in Palembang, while also documenting environmental conditions and local fly density. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in several market areas: meat, vegetables, fish, dry foods, and the temporary waste disposal site (TPS). Flies were collected using a sweeping net, and fly density was measured using a fly grill. Species identification was carried out in the laboratory, and microscopic examination was performed to detect STH egg contamination on the flies’ external surfaces. A total of 399 flies were captured, consisting of Musca domestica 218 (54.8%), Chrysomya megacephala 152 (38%), Sarcophaga sp. 19 (4.7%), and Lucilia sp. 10 (2.5%), which were grouped into 40 pooled samples. The highest fly density was recorded at the temporary waste disposal area and fell into the “very dense” category. During sampling, environmental measurements showed temperatures of 27–30°C, humidity of 69–77%, and light intensity of 20–2416 lux. No STH eggs were detected in any of the pooled samples. Although fly density especially at the TPS was relatively high, no STH egg contamination was found on the external body surfaces of the flies.
