PENGARUH PROGRAM EDUKASI DIABETES MELLITUS BERBASIS WHATSAPP GROUP TERHADAP PENGETAHUAN PADA PRA LANSIA

Lutfiani, Irma - Personal Name;

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) currently constitute the majority of global health problems, one of which is diabetes mellitus. Diabetes mellitus is influenced by unhealthy lifestyle behaviors, such as poor dietary patterns, lack of physical activity, overweight or obesity, and smoking habits. The prevention of diabetes mellitus can be achieved through health education programs. Health education may be obtained from various sources, either directly from healthcare professionals or through online platforms, including smartphone-based information access. One of the most commonly used smartphone platforms is the WhatsApp application, which serves as a medium for communication and information sharing. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the effect of a WhatsApp group-based diabetes mellitus education program on knowledge among pre-elderly adults. This study employed a quantitative research method with a pre-experimental design using a one-group pre-test and post-test approach. The sample was selected using a purposive sampling technique, involving 36 respondents. The intervention consisted of diabetes mellitus education delivered through video media and an e-booklet over a period of three days. Prior to the intervention, the majority of respondents had a moderate level of knowledge (20 respondents; 54.6%) and a low level of knowledge (16 respondents; 44.4%). After the intervention, most respondents demonstrated a good level of knowledge (34 respondents; 94.4%). The analysis of knowledge using the Marginal Homogeneity test showed a statistically significant improvement, with a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05). This finding indicates that the WhatsApp group-based diabetes mellitus education program is effective in improving knowledge among pre-elderly adults.
