KARAKTERISTIK STATUS BESI IBU HAMIL PADA PERSALINAN PRETERM DI RSUP MOHAMMAD HOESIN PALEMBANG PERIODE AGUSTUS 2022- JULI 2025

Jasi, Amirah Khalishah - Personal Name;

Background: Preterm delivery remains one of the leading causes of neonatal morbidity and mortality. One contributing factor is maternal iron status, particularly iron deficiency anemia (IDA). Hematological parameters such as Hb, MCV, MCHC, RDW, as well as the Mentzer and Green-King indices, can serve as early indicators of iron status disturbances in pregnant women. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study utilized secondary data from medical records of pregnant women who experienced preterm delivery between August 2022 and July 2025. A total of 188 records that met the inclusion criteria were analyzed. Collected data included sociodemographic characteristics, clinical profiles, hemoglobin levels, hematological parameters, and calculated Mentzer and Green & King indices. Data were analyzed univariately and presented in frequency distribution tables. Results: Most respondents were within the non-risk age group (76.6%), nulliparous, and had a senior high school education level. The majority were overweight and did not undergo adequate antenatal care. A total of 56.4% of pregnant women were anemic. Hematological parameters showed that most respondents had normal RBC counts (87.2%), normal RDW (76.1%), normocytic erythrocytes (69.7%), and normochromic MCHC (86.7%). Based on the Mentzer Index, 99,1% were classified as having IDA, while the Green-King Index identified 99,1% as IDA. Conclusion: Anemia and impaired iron status, particularly iron deficiency anemia, were highly prevalent among pregnant women with preterm delivery at Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital. Although most hematological parameters were within normal ranges, both the Mentzer and Green & King indices revealed a markedly high prevalence of IDA. These findings highlight the importance of early detection of iron status and routine hematological monitoring during pregnancy to help prevent preterm birth complications. Keywords: anemia, iron status, preterm, pregnant women, Mentzer, Green-King.
