EFEKTIVITAS METODE PEMBELAJARAN ROLE PLAY DALAM MENINGKATKAN KEMAMPUAN BAHASA ISYARAT PADA ANAK TUNARUNGU DI SLB-B PEMBINA PALEMBANG
Background: Deaf children generally rely more on nonverbal communication, such as sign language, to interact. Sign language plays an important role in enhancing communication skills and social integration, thus it needs to be taught from an early age. The role play method offers a more interactive and participatory approach, allowing children to learn through direct experience and improve their understanding of communication contexts. Previous studies have shown that this method is effective in improving the language and vocabulary skills of deaf children. This study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of the role play method in improving sign language skills among deaf children at SLB-B Pembina Palembang. Methods: This research employed a quasi-experimental design. The samples were students from SLB-B Pembina Palembang who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Sampling was carried out using a purposive sampling technique. Results: The mean difference between pretest and posttest scores was 10. Statistical analysis showed a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant difference between pretest and posttest results. Further analysis of the knowledge, psychomotor, and comprehension domains revealed p = 0.916 (p > 0.05) for comprehension (paired t-test), p = 0.007 (p < 0.05) for knowledge (Wilcoxon signed-rank test), and p = 0.01 (p < 0.05) for psychomotor (Wilcoxon signed-rank test). These findings indicate a significant improvement in the knowledge and psychomotor domains. Conclusion: The role play learning method is effective in improving sign language skills among deaf children, particularly in the knowledge and psychomotor domains.
