DEVELOPING MUSI BANYUASIN LOCAL CULTURE-BASED NARRATIVE TEXTS FOR EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMP NEGERI 6 BABAT SUPAT
This research aimed to develop Musi Banyuasin local culture-based narrative texts as reading materials for eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 6 Babat Supat. The study was conducted to address the lack of culturally relevant English materials and to promote students’ reading comprehension and cultural awareness. The research applied the Development research design proposed by Akker (1999) and Tessmer (1993), consisting of several stages: self-evaluation, expert review, one-to-one evaluation, small group evaluation, and field test. The participants were eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 6 Babat Supat in the academic year 2025/2026. Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, expert validations, and reading comprehension tests. The results showed that the developed materials were valid, practical, and effective. The validity was confirmed by expert judgments on content, construct, and media aspects. The practicality was supported by students’ positive responses in one-to-one and small group evaluations, with average scores of 3.4 and 3.46, respectively. The effectiveness was proven by students’ pre-test and post-test results, where 65.42% and 80.83% achieved the criteria for achieving learning objectives (KKTP = 70), and a strong correlation (r = 0.776) was found between pre-test and post-test scores. It can be concluded that the developed Musi Banyuasin local culture-based narrative texts are feasible to be used as English reading materials for eighth-grade students. These materials not only enhance students’ reading comprehension but also foster their appreciation of local culture, promoting meaningful and contextual learning experiences.
