DIFFICULTIES AND STRATEGIES FACED BY THE STUDENTS IN TAKING USEPT (UNIVERSITAS SRIWIJAYA ENGLISH PROFICIENCY TEST): A CASE STUDY OF NON-ENGLISH STUDENTS OF SRIWIJAYA UNIVERSITY
The purpose of this research is to explore the difficulties and strategies faced by students majoring in non-English in preparing for and succeeding in the USEPT (Universitas Sriwijaya English Proficiency Test). The method applied was qualitative method with a case study approach. The data were collected by using an in-depth interview that was given to the sample students who were selected through applying the purposive sampling technique. The participants of the research was the eight-semester of Non-English students who have undertaken the USEPT test and also already taken the test more than once, consisted of 10 students from different majors and faculties. The results of the data analysis showed that: 1) the score distribution of participants seems to be insufficient in achieving the target scores of study program, 2) regarding the strategies, participants used a variety of strategies to address the challenges they faced across the listening, reading, and structure sections, 3) students may face difficulties in doing the test because of several factors including from the questions, external and internal factors. Hence, it can be concluded that USEPT test creates pressure among non-English students, and for that, the participants presented strategies aimed to deal with the difficulties. At the end, it is hope with the USEPT test to get some improvements which can help students to alleviate with the challenges and promote student success in the test.
