ABSTRACT Factors Associated Constipation in Children with Cerebral Palsy at Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Background: Cerebral palsy (CP) is a neuromotor disorder often accompanied by constipation, which can impair quality of life and worsen clinical outcomes. Several factors such as functional independence level, communication ability, use of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), CP type, and diet are suspected to contribute to constipation in children with CP. Objective: To determine the factors associated with constipation in children with CP at Mohammad Hoesin Hospital, Palembang. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional design involving 101 children with CP selected through total consecutive sampling. Data were collected through interviews, clinical observation, and medical records. Statistical analysis included chi-square tests and multivariate logistic regression. Results: The prevalence of constipation among children with CP was 54.5%. Factors significantly associated with constipation were non-spastic CP type (p=0.025; OR=0.297), quadriplegic topography (p=0.015; OR=2.743), functional independence/GMFCS level IV–V (p=0.005; OR=3.169), use of AEDs (p=0.034; OR=2.485), and use of antispasmodic drugs (p=0.005; OR=3.176). Conclusion: Spastic CP was associated with a lower incidence of constipation, while GMFCS level IV–V and use of AEDs increased the risk. Integrated management of these risk factors is necessary to improve the quality of life in children with cerebral palsy. Keywords: cerebral palsy, constipation, GMFCS, antiepileptic drugs, risk factors
