PENGARUH METODE BUTTERFLY HUG TERHADAP TINGKAT KECEMASAN (ANXIETY) MAHASISWA
Anxiety is one of the most common mental health problems experienced by university students. Academic demands, family-related issues, financial difficulties, and the social environment contribute to increased anxiety, which, if left unaddressed, may negatively affect mental health, emotional well-being, and academic performance. One non-pharmacological intervention that can be used to reduce anxiety is the butterfly hug method, a bilateral stimulation technique involving self-hugging movements that has been shown to promote calmness. This study aimed to analyze the effect of the butterfly hug method on anxiety levels among nursing students. This study employed a quasi-experimental design using a pretest-posttest with control group design. The study population consisted of nursing students at Sriwijaya University from the 2021-2025 cohorts. Probability sampling with a stratified random sampling technique was used to select the participants. The instrument used to measure anxiety levels was the Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (ZSAS/SRAS). Univariate analysis showed that most respondents were female (92.9%), and the largest proportion were 22 years old (26.2%). Prior to the intervention, the majority of participants in both groups experienced severe anxiety, accounting for 33.3% in the intervention group and 42.9% in the control group. After the butterfly hug intervention, anxiety levels in the intervention group predominantly decreased to moderate anxiety (47.6%). Marginal homogeneity test results indicated a significant reduction in anxiety levels in the intervention group after the butterfly hug intervention (p = 0.000, p ≤ a), whereas no significant change was observed in the control group (p = 0.274). Comparison between the two groups revealed a statistically significant difference (p = 0.001). These findings demonstrate that the butterfly hug method is effective in reducing anxiety levels among students. The butterfly hug technique can be recommended as a non-pharmacological intervention to support students' mental health.
