PENGARUH SILICON CARBIDE DAN RICE HUSK ASH TERHADAP SIFAT MEKANIK ALUMINIUM MELALUI STIR CASTING

Liza, M. Prama Diva - Personal Name;

The development of the automotive and aerospace industries is driving demand for lightweight materials such as aluminum alloys. In Indonesia, aluminum demand reaches 1.2 million tons per year, but 56% is still met by imports (ESDM, 2024). Aluminum waste, such as cans and spare parts, can pollute the environment. Aluminum recycling is a solution to reduce waste and dependence on imports, as well as save energy. However, the mechanical properties of used aluminum are low, requiring reinforcement using SiC and rice husk ash (RHA) to increase hardness and strength. Indonesia produces 10.6 million tons of rice husk annually, but most of it remains untapped. The combination of SiC and RHA in recycled aluminum matrix has not been widely studied, especially the synergistic effect of both on mechanical properties and microstructure. Stir Casting is a commonly used fabrication method due to its cost-effectiveness and ease of implementation. This study aims to analyze the effect of SiC and RHA weight fractions on the mechanical properties of Aluminum Matrix Composite (AMC) fabricated by Stir Casting. This study will examine the effect of SiC and RHA addition on hardness, impact resistance, and microstructure of recycled aluminum composites. Variations in SiC and RHA fractions were tested by keeping RHA constant at 2% and magnesium (Mg) at 1%, as well as varying SiC from 0 to 8% and vice versa. The fabrication process was carried out at a pouring temperature of 700 °C with stirring at 350 rpm for 10 minutes. Tests included hardness, impact resistance, and microstructure analysis. This research demonstrates that the combination of SiC and RHA can improve the mechanical properties of aluminum composites made from recycled materials, providing a more environmentally friendly and sustainable alternative in composite material development.
