STUDENTS’ PERCEPTIONS ON THE USE OF INSTAGRAM REELS AND THEIR ENGLISH READING COMPREHENSION AT SRIWIJAYA UNIVERSITY
STUDENTS’ PERCEPTIONS ON THE USE OF INSTAGRAM REELS AND THEIR ENGLISH READING COMPREHENSION AT SRIWIJAYA UNIVERSITY ABSTRACT This study explores the perceptions of eighth-semester students in the English Education Study Program at Sriwijaya University toward the use of Instagram Reels in enhancing their English reading comprehension. Using a descriptive qualitative method, data were gathered through openended questionnaires and analyzed with thematic analysis. A total of 65 students who actively use Instagram Reels participated in the study, selected through purposive sampling. The results showed that most students held positive perceptions, noting that Instagram Reels provided consistent exposure to English through captions, subtitles, and comments. Several participants applied strategies such as pausing, rewatching, and taking notes, while others followed educational accounts to improve vocabulary and comprehension. Even those who did not use Reels intentionally for learning still experienced incidental learning benefits. Overall, Instagram Reels is seen as an engaging, relatable, and effective supplementary tool to support English reading comprehension among university students in a digital learning context. Keywords: Instagram Reels, students’ perceptions, reading comprehension, English Education, incidental learning, thematic analysis.
