HUBUNGAN KADAR FERITIN SERUM DENGAN TINGGI BADAN TERHADAP USIA PADA PASIEN ANAK THALASEMIA-β MAYOR DI RS MOHAMMAD HOESIN PALEMBANG

Putri, Nadia Firestya - Personal Name;

Background: β-thalassemia major is a genetic disorder that causes chronic anemia, requiring patients to undergo regular lifelong blood transfusions. Repeated transfusions and ineffective erythropoiesis lead to iron accumulation, which is indicated by elevated serum ferritin levels. Iron overload can affect endocrine function, including growth hormone, thereby increasing the risk of growth disorders such as stunting. Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang is a thalassemia referral center with a continuously increasing number of patients. However, data regarding the relationship between serum ferritin levels and height-for-age remain limited. Methods: This study employed an observational analytic design with a cross-sectional approach. The study sample consisted of 95 pediatric patients with β-thalassemia major who met the inclusion criteria and did not meet the exclusion or drop-out criteria. Data on serum ferritin levels over the last three months were obtained from medical records, while height data were collected through height measurements and medical records. Height-for-age status was determined using WHO and CDC growth charts. Bivariate analysis was performed using fisher’s exact test. Results: Of the 95 respondents, the majority had very high serum ferritin levels or >2500 μg/L, accounting for 72,6%. Most respondents were categorized as stunted based on the height-for-age index, comprising 80%. The analysis showed no relationship between serum ferritin levels and height-for-age (p = 1,000). Conclusion: There was no relationship between serum ferritin levels and height-for-age among pediatric patients with β-thalassemia major at Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang. Keywords: β-thalassemia major, serum ferritin levels, height-for-age.
