PENGARUH PENAMBAHAN KITOSAN TERHADAP KARAKTERISTIK TENSILE STRENGTH DARI KARAGENAN Eucheuma spinosum
The issue of non-biodegradable plastic waste and its environmental impact prompted the development of natural and biodegradable packaging, such as edible films. This research utilized extract of carrageenan derived from Eucheuma spinosum seaweed as the main ingredient for producing edible films, while also investigating the effect of adding chitosan on the mechanical properties, thickness, and structure of the films. The carrageenan extraction involved determining the yield and drying shrinkage, which were then used in film production with varying chitosan concentrations (0.5% - 2%). The mechanical properties of the films were analyzed through tensile strength testing and surface morphology with SEM. The results showed that the addition of chitosan could increase tensile strength up to an optimal point, but excessive addition led to a decrease in strength. The produced films exhibited a range of thicknesses and had smooth surfaces. The maximum tensile strength recorded was 15.31 MPa, while the minimum was 2.18 MPa. The film thickness ranged from 0.0598 mm to 0.20907 mm, with smooth surfaces that met bioplastic standards.
