ABSTRACT This study aims to determine the use of the communication function of expressive speech acts in the Hello Cello novel, as well as a reference for students who will compose or write dialogues in novel texts. This research method uses a qualitative descriptive approach. The results of the data analysis show that there are 7 communicative functions of expressive speech acts, namely (1 function of saying congratulations as many as 7 data in the form of indirect speech acts; (2 functions of saying Praise as many as 28 data (3) function of Thank You as many as 19 data (4) function of apologizing as many as 6 data (5) function of Blaming as many as 1 data 6) function of criticizing as many as 9 data. and (7) function of condolences as many as 1 data. The implications of this study include learning Indonesian in grade XI SMA even semester on KD 3.9 Analyzing the content and language of Novels 4.9 Designing Novels or novelettes by paying attention to the content and language both orally and in writing.
