ANALISIS WACANA KRITIS PADA FILM MONSTER 2023
This study aims to analyze the representation of toxic masculinity in the Film Monster (2023) using Van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis model. The focus of the study includes textual strategies used to construct the narrative of toxic masculinity, the characters’ social cognition in interpreting masculinity, and the influence of Japanese socio-cultural context on this construction. This research adopts a qualitative method by analyzing the text structure, social cognition, and sociocultural context. The results show that Monster represents toxic masculinity through subtle yet powerful textual strategies, such as the use of derogatory diction, a non-linear narrative structure, silent expressions, and visual symbols like dim lighting and enclosed spaces. These strategies frame masculinity not as an inherent trait, but as a social construct embedded through language, behavior, and symbolic representation. In the dimension of social cognition, the characters in the film demonstrate an internalization of hegemonic masculine values, such as emotional repression, a drive for dominance, and the avoidance of traits deemed feminine. These mental models shape how the characters respond to social pressure, form relationships, and interpret their male identity. Meanwhile, in the social context dimension, the film highlights how Japan’s patriarchal culture shapes and sustains masculine norms through institutions such as the family, school, and society. Traditional values like gaman (enduring hardship without complaint) and enryo (restraining self-expression to maintain social harmony) reinforce expectations for men to appear strong, resilient, and unemotional. This social system creates gender inequality, where individuals who fail to meet masculine standards face stigma, exclusion, and even symbolic violence. Thus, the study concludes that toxic masculinity in Monster 2023 is not merely individual behavior, but an ideological discourse constructed and maintained by dominant structures of power and culture in Japanese society.
