GAMBARAN PRAKTIK PERSONAL HYGIENE SAAT MENSTRUASI PADA SANTRIWATI PESANTREN MA’HAD ZAADUL MA’AD
Background: Menstruation is a physiological process experienced by adolescent girls as a sign of reproductive maturity. Inadequate personal hygiene practices during menstruation can increase the risk of urinary tract and reproductive tract infections. Female students living in Islamic boarding schools face unique challenges, such as limited sanitation facilities, lack of privacy, and cultural factors that may influence personal hygiene behavior. This study aimed to describe the personal hygiene practices during menstruation among female students at Ma’had Zaadul Ma’ad Islamic Boarding School. Methods: This research was a descriptive study using a cross-sectional design. The sample consisted of 60 female students aged 10-16 years who had experienced menstruation and had lived in the boarding school for at least six months. Data were collected using a validated questionnaire by Zhahirah (2022), covering aspects such as pad-changing habits, bathing, handwashing, and sanitary pad disposal. Data were analyzed descriptively using frequency and percentage distributions. Results: Most respondents demonstrated moderate personal hygiene practices (75%), while good (18.3%) and poor (6.7%) practices were less common. Older students tended to exhibit better hygiene practices. Parental education and occupation were not significantly associated with hygiene behavior. While most respondents maintained genital hygiene properly, deficiencies were noted in the use of hygiene aids, disposed of sanitary pads, and availability of sanitation facilities. Conclusion: The majority of students at Ma’had Zaadul Ma’ad Islamic Boarding School demonstrated fairly good personal hygiene practices during menstruation. However, improvement in reproductive health education and enhancement of WASH facilities are needed to support optimal menstrual hygiene management within boarding school environments.
