ENGLISH AND NON-ENGLISH STUDENTS OF SRIWIJAYA UNIVERSITY PERCEPTION ON VOCABULARY ENHANCEMENT THROUGH LISTENING TO ENGLISH SONGS ON SPOTIFY

Aurora, Syavina Syahla Putri - Personal Name;

This study explores the perceptions of English and non-English students at Sriwijaya University towards vocabulary enhancement through listening to English songs on Spotify. Using a qualitative descriptive method, data were collected from 175 students through questionnaires and interviews. The study aims to investigate students’ attitudes, usage patterns, and challenges related to using Spotify as a vocabulary learning tool. The findings show that both groups held positive perceptions, with English majors demonstrating more strategic and academic approaches, such as analysing lyrics, identifying new vocabulary, and applying it contextually. Non-English students tended to engage more casually but still benefited from repeated exposure to new words and the emotional connection built through music. Spotify’s features which particularly real-time lyrics, replay options, and ease of access were considered highly supportive for vocabulary acquisition. However, challenges were also noted. English students reported difficulty with unclear pronunciation, fast tempo, and idiomatic expressions, while non-English students more commonly cited distractions and limited vocabulary knowledge. Despite this, both groups appreciated Spotify as a flexible, enjoyable, and accessible platform for language learning. This study suggests the integration of digital music platforms like Spotify can enrich informal learning and be a complementary tool in vocabulary development for EFL learners.
