AKOMODASI KOMUNIKASI ANTARBUDAYA DALAM SISTEM PENDIDIKAN BERASRAMA SMA NEGERI SUMATERA SELATAN TAHUN 2023 (Studi Fenomenologi pada Siswa/i Kelas XI yang Menjadi Perwakilan Setiap Wilayah Asal)

Intercultural communication accommodation is an individual’s ability to modify or adjust their interpersonal aspects in response to multicultural interactions. This ability was demonstrated in the context of intercultural communication, such as at SMAN Sumatera Selatan, a dormitory-based school in Palembang. The dormitory system brings together students from 17 districts in South Sumatera Province with diverse cultural backgrounds. The research aimed to understand the forms of communication accommodation and the meanings related to multicultural conditions among 11th-grade students at SMAN Sumatera Selatan, who have more active engagement compared to other grades. Data for the study were collected through qualitative research methods and a phenomenological approach, involving interviews about student’s experiences in accommodating communication and documentary studies. The theoretical framework used was Howard Giles’ Intercultural Communication Theory, specifically Communication Accommodation Theory (1973) which categorizes accommodation into convergence, divergence, and over-accommodation. The findings indicate that 11th-grade students tend to converge by adjusting verbal and nonverbal communication, demonstrating tolerance, and showing interest in learning new cultures. Divergence occurs when they highlight, defend, and introduce their culture. Over-accommodation is evident when communicating with individuals of differing characteristics. Furthermore, students interpret multicultural conditions as identities of each respective region that must be mutually understood.
