KEBERLANJUTAN KONSERVASI LAHAN PURUN BERBASIS GENDER DI DESA MENANG RAYA KECAMATAN PEDAMARAN OKI
This study focuses on the sustainability of gender-based peatland conservation in Menang Raya Village, Pedamaran District, OKI. The purpose of this study is to determine the sustainability of gender-based peatland conservation. The method used is qualitative with a research strategy through a case study approach. The conservation practices observed include the establishment of conservation areas for local communities that utilize peat plants for handicrafts, harvesting methods that do not damage the ecosystem, the use of purun as a material for handicrafts, and capacity building through handicraft training. Ecologically, purun land conservation maintains the function of peatlands, reduces the risk of drought and fire, and serves as a community water reserve. Economically, it facilitates the growth of local businesses, diversifies community income, and builds economic resilience. Socially, conservation initiatives empower residents, increase participation in purun protection, preserve cultural heritage, and strengthen social bonds. Collaboration between genders is crucial: men are primarily involved in purun harvesting, while women manage processing and weaving into handicrafts, each contributing to ecological, economic, and social sustainability. Key challenges in sustainable conservation include climate and environmental change, environmental degradation, conversion to oil palm plantations, market constraints, low financial support for purun products, shifting demand and values, regulations, and limited community awareness of conservation efforts. Addressing these issues is essential for the continuity and improvement of sustainable and gender-inclusive peatland management.
