STUDENTS’ EXPERIENCES IN DOING ENGLISH SELF-TALK TOWARD THEIR ENGLISH FLUENCY AMONG 3RD SEMESTER STUDENTS OF THE ENGLISH EDUCATION STUDY PROGRAM AT UNIVERSITAS SRIWIJAYA

Ahmaji, Raden Maulana Wahyu - Personal Name;

This research intends to analyze the effect of students using self-talk and how self-talk practice helps improve students’ speaking fluency. The present qualitative case study was conducted on fourteen third-semester students of the English Education Study Program at Universitas Sriwijaya. The data collection for this study was conducted using three methods: daily self-talk routine observation diaries, individual semi-structured interviews to understand experiences and reflection, and speaking scores from the Informal Interaction course. The study found that students made English self-talk as part of their daily routine and effortlessly adapted to English self-talk while commuting, cooking, preparing for teaching and performing other personalized English self-talk. The self-talk practice was found to be an autonomous learning strategy that encouraged speaking fluency, increased confidence, and reduced speaking anxiety. The study emphasizes the self-regulated speaking practice that happens outside of the classroom and operates in English in the classroom, and the study also reflects that the English self-talk can improve someone’s speaking skills and be utilized to improve communicative ability. Keywords: self-talk, speaking fluency, qualitative case study, autonomous learning, speaking assessment
