KORELASI KADAR MALONDIALDEHYDE (MDA) DENGAN SARKOPENIA PADA KOMUNITAS POSYANDU USIA LANJUT DI PALEMBANG
Background Elderly individuals represent a population with a high potential for a decline in the quantity and quality of skeletal muscles, a condition known as sarcopenia. Muscle quantity refers to the reduction in muscle mass, while muscle quality can be assessed through muscle strength and physical performance as age advances. Sarcopenia significantly reduces the ability to perform daily functional activities and increases the risk of falls and fractures, ultimately leading to a loss of independence. This study aims to evaluate the correlation between malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and sarcopenia among the elderly community attending the Posyandu in Palembang. Methods This study was an analytical observational research employing a cross-sectional design. The sampling technique used was consecutive sampling, yielding a total of 50 participants. Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were measured using standard laboratory methods, while sarcopenia was assessed based on muscle mass, muscle strength, physical performance, and calf circumference. Data were collected from patients aged ≥60 years who met the inclusion criteria. Results The analysis revealed an elevation in malondialdehyde (MDA) levels among elderly individuals with sarcopenia. Higher MDA concentrations were observed in patients who demonstrated reduced muscle strength and physical performance. However, these differences did not reach statistical significance. Conclusion An increase in malondialdehyde (MDA) levels was observed in patients with reduced muscle strength and physical performance, although this elevation was not directly significant in relation to sarcopenia. Nonetheless, MDA has the potential to serve as a prognostic biomarker for predicting the risk of sarcopenia and presarcopenia. Its use may support the development of preventive intervention strategies targeted at the elderly population.
