KORELASI KADAR ASAM URAT SERUM DENGAN MASSA OTOT, KEKUATAN OTOT, PERFORMA FISIK DAN LINGKAR BETIS PADA SARKOPENIA KOMUNITAS POSYANDU USIA LANJUT DI PALEMBANG
Background: As people age, the human body undergoes physiological changes, including a progressive reduce of skeletal muscle mass and strength, known as sarcopenia. The diagnosis of sarcopenia is based on calf circumference screening, also measurement of muscle mass, muscle strength, and physical performance. The primary factors contributing to sarcopenia are systemic inflammation and oxidative stress. Uric acid is believed to have both pro-oxidant and antioxidant properties and an indicator of oxidative stress. Therefore, this study aims to determine the correlation between serum uric acid levels and muscle mass, muscle strength, physical performance, and calf circumference among Sarcopenia in community of Posyandu Lanjut Usia Palembang. Methods: This study is an observational analytic study with a cross-sectional approach. Consecutive sampling technique was applied to select 42 subjects who fulfilled the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were collected through interviews, questionnaires, and direct measurements to the subjects. Data were analyzed using Pearson’s correlation test for normally distributed data and Spearman’s correlation test for non-normally distributed data. Additionally, backward regression analysis was performed for multivariate analysis. Results: This study involved 37 female subjects (88.1%) and 5 male subjects (11.9%) aged ≥ 60 years. Bivariate analysis showed that uric acid levels were significantly associated with gender (p=0.002), smoking history (p=0.015), muscle strength (p=0.018), and physical performance (p=0.047). After adjusting for confounding variables, the results indicated that uric acid levels had a significant correlation with muscle strength, physical performance, and calf circumference but didn’t have correlated with muscle mass. Conclusion: Hyperuricemia correlates with increased muscle strength and decreased calf circumference and physical performance among older adults with sarcopenia in the Posyandu community of Palembang.
