PERCEIVED BENEFITS OF ORAL PRESENTATIONS IN HELPING STUDENTS IMPROVE THEIR CONFIDENCE IN SPEAKING
This study aims to investigate the perceived benefits of oral presentations in class in helping students improve their confidence in speaking. The study focuses on fifth- and seventh-semester students of the English Education Study Program at Sriwijaya University. A qualitative descriptive method was used with a questionnaire consisting of 22 items and 4 open-ended questions to collect data from 112 participants. Thematic analysis shows that oral presentations significantly contribute to confidence, communication skills, and public speaking ability. The findings of this study indicate that these activities not only help reduce feelings of nervousness and shyness but also encourage students to organize ideas more effectively, improve pronunciation, and enrich vocabulary. Although they face challenges such as anxiety, lack of vocabulary, and fear of making mistakes, students use Several strategies, including preparation, practice, and the use of notes, are employed to overcome these difficulties. Although many previous studies have discussed similar benefits, the novelty of this research lies in its focus on how presentations specifically enhance speaking confidence as well as in identifying concrete strategies used by students to face these challenges in the context of this study. Overall, presentations are perceived as an effective activity for developing English speaking confidence and providing valuable experience for both academic and professional contexts.
