THE STUDENTS’ USE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN WRITING CLASSES: A QUALITATIVE STUDY ON THE PERCEPTIONS OF LECTURERS AND EFL UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS
As AI tools become increasingly common in writing classes, there is a pressing need to explore how they affect both teaching and learning. Understanding lecturers’ and students’ perspectives is crucial to ensure that AI enhances writing skills without diminishing students’ independent thinking and creativity. This qualitative study investigates how lecturers and EFL undergraduate students perceive the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in writing classes. The research focuses on two (2) research problems, namely (1) What are the lecturers’ perceptions on the students’ use of AI tools in writing classes?; and (2) What are students’ perceptions on the use of AI tools in writing classes? The method of this study was qualitative case study. By using purposive sampling technique, three (3) lecturers and nine (9) undergraduate students of English Education Study Program at Sriwijaya University were chosen as participants of this study. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews. Thematic analysis was carried out to analyze the collected data. Findings show two main themes, namely advantages and disadvantages of AI use in writing classes, Lecturers expressed concerns about students’ over-reliance on AI, reduced comprehension, and declining critical thinking, though they acknowledged its benefits for grammar and structure. Students reported that AI supported brainstorming and improved clarity but sometimes misinterpreted topics or altered their writing voice. These results suggest that while AI can enhance writing instruction, its effective use requires clear guidance and critical reflection.
