ANALISIS SIFAT FISIK JAGUNG (Zea mays L.) BUTIRAN PADA BERBAGAI TINGKAT KADAR AIR
Maize (Zea mays L.) is a strategic agricultural commodity that plays an important role in the food, feed and industrial sectors. The moisture content of corn kernels affects their physical properties, such as size, density, and porosity, which have an impact on storage and processing efficiency. This study aimed to analyze changes in the physical properties of piped maize at various moisture content levels with a systematic experimental approach. Parameters observed included diameter, roundness, volume, mass density, friction angle, as well as corn kernel cavity volume. The results of this study are expected to provide useful information for the agricultural industry in optimizing the corn postharvest handling process. The research was conducted using an experimental method in the laboratory using the piped maize variety Bisi 18. Maize samples were divided into three groups of different moisture contents (10%, 15%, and 20%) to analyze the changes in the physical properties of the kernels. The results showed that moisture content had a significant effect on almost all physical parameters measured. An increase in moisture content leads to an increase in grain volume and surface area, but also contributes to a decrease in density and changes in the mechanical characteristics of corn kernels. Understanding the relationship between moisture content and physical properties of maize is essential to determine optimal postharvest strategies to reduce yield losses and improve the quality of maize products.
