STRATEGI AFRIKA SELATAN DALAM MENINGKATKAN EKSISTENSI GEOPOLITIK MELALUI KERJA SAMA BRICS

South Africa's strategy to enhance its geopolitical existence through BRICS cooperation is part of a rational strategy to reduce economic dependence on Western markets and secure its national interests following the 2008 global financial crisis. With high economic vulnerability due to the dominance of traditional partners, South Africa decided to join the BRICS alliance to diversify its international relations. This study analyzes the decision-making process behind this strategy through the lens of William D. Coplin's Rational Choice theory. Using three key indicators: domestic political conditions, economic and military capabilities, and international context, this study finds that decision-makers in South Africa play a significant role in formulating policies that are rational and based on cost-benefit calculations. South Africa leverages its BRICS membership to gain new market access, infrastructure funding through the New Development Bank (NDB), and strengthen its bargaining position as a representative of the Global South. The findings indicate that South Africa's foreign policy decisions are driven by rational considerations to safeguard long-term economic stability, despite facing trade asymmetry challenges, in order to expand its geopolitical influence in a
