REPRESENTASI DISKRIMINASI PENYANDANG DISABILITAS DALAM FILM AGAK LAEN (ANALISIS SEMIOTIKA ROLAND BARTHES)

The movie Agak Laen as the highest grossing movie of 2024 has been criticized for discriminating against people with disabilities through a speech impaired character named Obet as a janitor at the night market. This research uses Roland Barthes' semiotic theory and qualitative-descriptive method to reveal how the representation of disability discrimination in this film. Data were collected through documentation, literature study, and interviews. Based on 9 relevant scenes, it was found that Obet as a disabled character only serves as a story and comedy tool, with reduced representation. The misunderstanding that often occurs is a sitcom concept that is vulnerable to the context of discrediting disability limitations. Obet's character in the story still reflects the stereotypical myth of disability, which say as a weak, helpless, unable to work optimally, doubtful of his voice, and limited in his contribution. The discrimination that occurs in this film is due to the lack and weakness of an inclusive messages that are missing, covered by Obet's failures that are framed with helplessness and limited roles.
