PENGUJIAN AWAL TAR PADA UPDRAFT GASIFIER DENGAN GAS KELUAR DARI ATAS DAN DAERAH PEMBAKARAN
Tar is an unavoidable by-product of biomass gasification and can cause operational problems such as system blockage. This study aims to analyze the characteristics of tar formation during coconut shell biomass gasification using a modified updraft gasifier with two gas outlet channels, namely the upper outlet and the combustion-zone outlet. The evaluation was conducted based on tar mass per unit volume of gas as an indicator of producer gas quality. The results show that the tar content in the upper outlet is significantly higher than that in the combustion-zone outlet. The average tar yield obtained from the upper outlet reached 117.49 gram/m³, whereas only 0.499 gram/m³ was measured at the combustion outlet. The high tar content in the upper outlet is attributed to its proximity to the pyrolysis zone, while the low tar content in the combustion outlet is associated with elevated temperatures that promote tar cracking reactions. Gas flow structure also influences tar distribution, as most of the gas exits through the upper outlet. Compared with a conventional updraft gasifier, the combustion-outlet modification demonstrates a substantial reduction in tar content and shows potential for producing cleaner gas. Visual analysis indicates that tar collected from both outlets exhibits similar physical characteristics, differing only in quantity. This study is expected to provide a basis for further development and optimization efforts aimed at reducing tar content in updraft gasifier systems.
