Water availability throughout the growing season and limited fertile agricultural land remain major constraints in vegetable crop production, including kailan (Brassica oleraceae L. var. alboglabra), which has high nutritional and economic value. Therefore, innovations in irrigation systems and growing media are required to improve water use efficiency and crop yield. This study aimed to evaluate water use efficiency and the growth of kailan grown on a planting medium composed of rice husk charcoal and Ultisol soil, in which each treatment received cattle manure at 25% of the Ultisol soil volume and was irrigated using a subsurface drip irrigation system. The research was conducted from February to August 2025 at the Plant House and Laboratory of the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sriwijaya, using a randomized block design (RBD) with three levels of rice husk charcoal dosage (3%, 6%, and 9%), each replicated five times. The observed parameters included water use efficiency, fresh shoot weight, dry shoot weight, number of leaves, and plant height. The results showed that the application of 6% rice husk charcoal in Ultisol based growing media produced the best performance, as indicated by the highest water use efficiency as well as optimal growth and yield of kailan. This outcome is associated with the balanced physical properties of the growing media, particularly water holding capacity and porosity, which support water availability in the root zone. Therefore, the combination of 6% rice husk charcoal and a subsurface drip irrigation system has strong potential to enhance water use efficiency and productivity of kailan cultivation.
