REPRESENTASI KOMUNIKASI INKLUSIF CHILDREN OF DEAF ADULTS (CODA) DALAM DRAMA KOREA TWINKLING WATERMELON

Revcilia, Della - Personal Name;

The representation of deaf families and inclusive communication practices remains limited in popular media, particularly narratives that position CODA (Children of Deaf Adults) as central subjects within family communication dynamics. The Korean drama Twinkling Watermelon (2023) presents a cultural text that portrays interactions between the hearing and deaf worlds through the perspective of a CODA character as a communication bridge. This study aims to analyze the representation of inclusive communication in the drama sing Roland Barthes's semiotic theory, which consists of three analytical levels: denotation, connotation, and myth. The research employed a qualitative descriptive method by analyzing fourteen scenes that depict CODA family communication dynamics. The findings reveal that, at the denotative level, communication is represented through sign language, facial expressions, and body movements as forms of equal interaction; at the connotative level, silence symbolizes empathy and affection among family members; and at the myth level, the drama deconstructs the notion that deafness signifies limitation and constructs a new meaning in which silence also has a voice. In conclusion, Twinkling Watermelon represents inclusive communication as a human process that fosters empathy, equality, and love in diversity
