USING DUOLINGO FOR LEARNING VOCABULARY: PERSPECTIVES OF ENGLISH EDUCATION STUDY PROGRAM STUDENTS OF SRIWIJAYA UNIVERSITY
This aim of this study explores Sriwijaya University students' perspectives on using Duolingo for vocabulary learning in the English Education Study Program. Data were collected through two questionnaires and interviews with eight students. Findings reveal a positive view of Duolingo's gamified approach, praised for its accessibility and benefits like anytime practice and better word retention. However, challenges included unclear word meanings, limitations in comprehensive learning, awkward translations, restrictive practice systems, and speech recognition issues. The study concludes that while Duolingo effectively motivates vocabulary practice, it should be used alongside traditional methods for better grammar and contextual understanding, with recommendations for app improvements. However, some challenges were identified, including unclear word meanings (90.5% agreement), limitations in comprehensive vocabulary learning (95.3% agreement), awkward translations, the restrictive heart system that halts practice after mistakes, and problems with speech recognition. The study concludes that while Duolingo serves as an effective tool for motivation and vocabulary practice, it should complement traditional teaching methods to enhance grammar and contextual language usage. Recommendations include improving contextual learning within the app and modifying the strict "heart system."
