STUDENTS' PERCEPTION ON THE USE OF U-DICTIONARY TO SUPPORT VOCABULARY RETENTION

Halimathusadiah, Halimathusadiah - Personal Name;

This study aimed to investigate fourth-semester students’ perception on the use of U-Dictionary to support vocabulary retention. The participants were 40 students from English Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Sriwijaya University. Data were collected through semi-structured interview conducted via Zoom in June until July 2025 and analyzed thematically following Miles and Huberman (1994) interactive model. The findings revealed four main themes: (1) high familiarity with U-Dictionary multifunctional features; (2) moderate to frequent usage driven by academic needs; (3) predominantly positive perceptions of its effectiveness for retention, attributed to contextual elements such as example sentences, synonyms, pronunciation audio, and search history; (4) mixed engagement, with advantages like offline access contrasted by shortcomings such as intrusive advertisements and feature monotony. The app was perceived to have stronger impacts on receptive skills than productive ones. These results indicate that students view U-Dictionary positively as a supportive tool for long-term vocabulary retention, particularly when used actively in resource limited contexts. The study recommends strategic integration of the app EFL instruction and suggests future research adopt mixed-methods approaches to measure actual retention outcomes. Keyword: students’ perception, U-Dictionary, vocabulary retention.
