BEST PRACTICES IN TEACHING APPROACHES FOR TEACHING ENGLISH AT ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS: THE EXPERIENCES OF FORMER STUDENTS OF PPG PRAJABATAN
This study investigated the best practices in teaching approaches for English instruction at the elementary school level implemented by alumni of the Pre-Service Teacher Professional Education Program (PPG Prajabatan) of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Sriwijaya University, who teach in primary schools in Palembang. Using a qualitative research design, data were collected from three PPG Prajabatan alumni through written semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings indicated that the participants applied differentiated instruction based on students’ proficiency and learning characteristics, communicative and game-based approaches to promote engagement and confidence, and pedagogical flexibility through the integration of multiple teaching methods. These practices allowed teachers to adapt instruction to classroom conditions by combining interactive activities, peer support, and selected traditional techniques when necessary. The study concludes that effective English teaching at the elementary level relies on teachers’ pedagogical adaptability rather than the use of a single method, and it highlights the role of the PPG Prajabatan program in preparing professional and reflective teachers for English instruction for young learners.
